By PDG Jones Wong, Rotary Club of Island Green

Despite of the pandemic of COVID-19 with us over the years in our cities, we as Rotarians, are often amongst the early responders during a humanitarian crisis. We are the key community service partners in delivery and provision of long-term solutions and ongoing support. It’s not hard to understand why. Duty to others is at the heart of our fellow Rotarians, but there are also plenty of other people and Non-Rotarians from our friends and family members who want to partnering with us to offer their volunteering services at any time they are invited. Therefore, we need to establish our Rotary Community Corps (RCC) at the right timing.

In this Rotary Year 2021-2022, under the superb leadership of DG Keith Chow, 12 Rotary Community Corps are founded with the sponsorship by 11 Rotary Clubs. These 12 RCC are : RCC of GD-HK-MO-GBA, RCC of Peninsular Sunrise, RCC of Zuunmod Mongolia, RCC of Green HK, RCC of Evergreen Citizen HK, RCC of Elite-Orient, RCC of Soho HK, RCC of Oriental Pearl Macau, RCC of Hou Kuong Macau, RCC of Shatin, RCC of HK Fairview, and RCC of Khuree New RCC.  Mongolia.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank all the 11 Rotary clubs for a great support on RCC program this year. Please continue to charter your new RCC at any time whenever the community services need to be addressed.

RCC ARE ACTIVE IN D3450

Report from RCC Peninsula Sunrise

In the past 27 years, Rotary Club of Peninsula Sunrise has welcomed non-Rotarians to take part in their service projects. Thanks to the Rotary International District 3450 Speaker Pool Project, we are honored to have PDG Jones WONG to give us an introduction and insight of Rotary Community Corps (RCC) on September 1, 2021 and subsequently paved the way to the establishment of our own RCC allowing a more systematic way to liaise volunteers. Through the effort of reconnecting with past volunteers and friends who are keen in volunteering, we have officially formed Rotary Community Corps of Peninsula Sunrise on December 29, 2021 with Registered Dietitian Joyce Chan as President and 16 keen members.

Even the fierce Fifth Covid-19 wave couldn’t diminish our passion in giving back to the community, until now RCC president Joyce has organized 3 service projects, including both single club project and joint club projects.

The long battle with Covid has badly struck the community and it’s particularly worse for the vulnerable low-income families. Most of them were overburdened by depletion of food & protective equipment and unemployment complicated by the soaring price of essential necessities. Our first service project was giving out Covid relief packages for 80 low-income families residing in the Tung Chung area. Each relief package included a pack of 2kg rice, 3 hand sanitizers, 5 face shields, 10 masks and 3 boxes of test kits to support the low-income families to fight against Covid.

RCC President Joyce has also organized 2 other service projects named the Rotary Water Day, involving 2 door-to-door Covid relief package deliveries on both Women’s Day and Holy Saturday respectively to a total of 120 families residing in subdivided units. We have also relayed the important message of water preservation, and that little changes in dayto-day practices meant a lot.

To better understand the community’s needs and concerns amid this pandemic, online zoom chats have been conducted with some single mums and have had heart-to-heart conversations about the hardship themselves and their family were currently going through. Throughout the process, 20 families were identified with food insecurity and shortage in cooking equipment , hence we have delivered anti-pandemic materials, non-stick pans and food relief consisting of seafood, chicken and fresh produce to their doors in a contact free manner.

Given the overwhelmed positive feedback from recipients, we decided to extend more love and support to the vulnerable community. On Holy Saturday, RCC has recruited over 68 volunteers to distribute relief packages door-to-door and promote the importance of water-preserving to 100 subdivided units families residing in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Ching area. Together we have distributed 300 soup packs, 2000 sachets of soy powder, 100 sore throat lozenges, 200 reusable stainless straw, 1200 test kits, 100 medicated ointments, 100 boxes masks for adults and children respectively.

The three project services were a great success ! Altogether we have reached over 600 people with the help of over 80 volunteers in building resilience of these vulnerable families amidst this difficult time. Through hand-on volunteering services, RCC members recognise the spirit of Rotary and we look forward to having them being part of the Rotary family !

Report from RCC HK Fairview

Our RCC members have worked as a team on several occasions during the last couple of months in our club’s service projects.

Right after the relaxation of covid restriction measures, our club has organized an afternoon tea for a group of 40 and 36 seniors on April 27th, and then on May 25th respectively. These are mostly live-alone or under privileged elderlies from Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong districts, who have been isolated from social contacts during the prolonged pandemic event. We invited a speaker from Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation to do sharing, and organized games to provide for a fun experience. Around 5-7 RCC members were present each time to serve and look after the elderlies.

Separately, a few of our RCC members have enrolled and been acting as advisors for a group of form 4 and form 5 students, at our sponsored Interact school, for the purpose of guiding them towards a work experience during this summer.
