Marching into RY2022-23

Almost with the blink of an eye, another year has nearly passed since I took up the office of District Governor.  In the course of this troubled year, we at Rotary have evolved, grown, expanded, nurtured, donated, collaborated and volunteered, and thrived, despite all the challenges.

Rotary Year 2021-22 has been a tumbling and chaotic year. However, we were lucky to enjoy a peaceful six months when most District events such as the District Installation, Intercity Meeting, DLDA and End Polio Day could be brought to their successful conclusions.

Starting from the second half year onwards, Hong Kong’s fifth wave of Covid-19 pulled the reins on our events and service projects. We had to postpone or even call off Rotary events to avoid gatherings. However, I have been proud to witness how Rotarians have converted the dire situation into a source of strength and have still striven to excel. I am proud to have witnessed how devoted Rotarians were quick to adapt and fit into the new norm.  For example, Zoom meetings meant that meetings were still held and training was still continued within the district.

As we are counting down our days of RY2021-22, let’s not forget our key aim of Service Above Self. Let’s join hands and march into Rotary Year 2022-23 with confidence and preparing for new accomplishments. With the leadership of incoming District Governor Norman Lee and his team, we shall still dream big and take action; most importantly, Imagine Rotary.

Release of Annual Book

The Annual book is a review and recognition of those who have devoted themselves to Serve to Change Lives. Projects cannot be exhaustively listed because they are too numerous, and we have limited space. However, to me, and many of you, it contains our valuable and happy memories, as well as being a memoir of our Rotarians in action with the virtue of Rotary principles. It is a fitting conclusion to this fruitful and productive Rotary Year in spite of all the challenges !

62nd District Conference

What a wonderful event on 28th and 29th May! Thank you to every Rotarian who spent the weekend with us, both physically and virtually. My heartfelt thanks to our OC team for bringing us an excellent District Conference. At times, we might stumble. We are not always perfect, but you, my fellow Rotarians, are always perfect for us. We also had an entertaining evening with all the presidents performing a very beautifully written and meaningful song together. It reflected on how Rotarians’ hearts aim to serve with kindness and vigor.  The OC did an excellent job in preparing for the District Conference, and we are glad so many Rotarian attended. It was never an easy task, organizing the District Conference, given all the restrictions we faced, but with the dedication of the committee, we were able to deliver to you all an informative, interesting and fun event.

We would like to congratulate all awardees (see below). Once again, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for all your contributions ?

This Rotary Year, we have had one ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) breakout session in each of Hong Kong and Macau. We, as Rotarians, have an ultimate goal of creating lasting change – across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves. Companies adopt ESG because they care about their communities. I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone of you to explore more possible partnering projects that involve the core elements of ESG.

The completion of District Conference does not mark an end on our dedication to help the needy. After the 62ndDistrictConference, quality snacks from Kee Wah Bakery were donated to homeless people currently supported by Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (“NAAC”). While we are wrapping up this Rotary Year, we continue supporting community services and wish to share our care to people in need.

Nougats, black sesame biscuits & almond cookies of Kee Wah Bakery were donated to NAAC for supporting homeless people in their facility.

There are always some other aspects to unleash. This year, we Serve to Change Lives. Once again, thank you for making the 62nd District Conference special and memorable.

Disaster Relief Fund

We continued our work on helping the low-income families, with 11 joint projects being delivered with a total contribution of HKD 1,209,148. Thank you all AGs for coordinating with our service partners and clubs. I would also like to express my gratitude to all participating Rotarians. It is impossible to deliver the projects within such a short period of time without your contribution and action.

RAT Test Kit Donation

Due to recent surge in Covid cases in Hong Kong, our District managed to distribute around 10,000 sets of Rapid Antigen Tests Kit to two schools on 13 May. Since May, the club managed to donate around 46,500 sets of RAT tests to 9 schools, hoping to help identify infected persons. Rotary continued to support residents affected by the latest wave of the corona virus epidemic, through donations of medical supplies, daily necessities and services. I am certain related projects will continue through the coming months as it is unlikely the situation with the pandemic will be going away completely within that time, and more action is still needed to help fill the needs of society. Our services, attention and help will still definitely be required.

CP Academy Gradation Ceremony

The CP Academy Gradation Ceremony was held on 24 May 2022. Let’s congratulate all participating Charter-Presidents-to-be. The Membership Committee is determined to identify potential members as well as strengthening Rotarians’ sense of belonging. Setting up a club is only the first step; it is a CP’s job to provide proper guidance to maintain a club’s long-term sustainability and cohesion.  What we seek is not only quantity, but equally quality and continuity in our clubs and membership.  We need to ensure that newly-established clubs will implement procedures that develop a positive culture, which will give the clubs a strong start up and accountability of funding and membership fees.

2 New Satellite Clubs

The Rotary Year is almost over, and I am glad to welcome two Satellite Clubs; 1. Rotary Satellite Club of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area-Hengqin, Hong Kong; and 2. Rotary Satellite Club of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area – Elite Athletes (both chartered by RC of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area), which have now entered the Rotary family. Chartering Satellite clubs is an important stage to include more people from the broader community. This Rotary year, a total of 7 such clubs were formed, with 64 members being added to our Rotary family. Under the extraordinary circumstances of this past year, this is a remarkable achievement, and I thank all the clubs and our membership Chair PDG Eric Chin for all the hard work and dedication.

POA Photo/ Video Competition

After a series of deliberations, we finally got our winners for People of Action Photo/ Video Competition, the winners being: 1) RC of Star Avenue; 2) RC of Macau; 3) RC of Eminence Hong Kong & RC of Island Green; and 1)RC of Homantin Hill; 2) RC of Neoteric Hong Kong & RC of Soho Hong Kong; 3) RC of New Territories.

District Action Taken during Pandemic

Whether or not you are the winner, you are all rewarded with valuable memories and experience. Your excellent photos and videos clearly illustrate that we are all People of Action!

During the past year with its troubles, District 3450 has responded quickly to the needs of the community. Please read the below article to learn more about what we have done, and more importantly, what further action we can take to benefit the community.

Area of May – Area 6

Area 6 aims to deliver sustainable service projects. Feel free to learn more about how our fellow Rotarians Serve to Change Lives from the links below.

Organ donation Film competition closing ceremony

On the 26th of June, the district project of organ donation film competition held its closing ceremony at the Windsor building. The Head of Health promotion Branch Center of Health for Health Protection Dr. Raymond Ho was our guest of Honor.   Rotary club of Hong Kong Northwest and Rotary club of the HUB Hong Kong joined hands on this project from its start at the beginning of last year until the winning films were decided.  I, together with our panel of judges, selected the winners for two age-based categories, the first being for students under the age of 18, and the other being for people aged 19 to 30. I viewed the films selected by the panel of judges for the final winner.  I most certainly found the concepts, the creativity and the message of the films to be most invigorating and exciting.  PP Kelvin Ho (co-chairperson of the project) mentioned that, among all the similar film competitions, he found these 40 entries to have some very inspired and original approaches to the theme of promoting organ donation within the community.  One of the winning teams is from a primary school, which gives us great hope that the younger generation will truly come to understand the importance of such a virtuous deed, and that they will benefit from it in future years.

I was unable to the attend the closing ceremony physically but I prepared a video clip to thank all the committees and members involved at the ceremony.  Special thanks for the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northwest and Rotary club of the HUB Hong Kong, and also thanking Rotary club of Metropolitan Hong Kong for conducting the closing ceremony.  Of course, I cannot forget to thank the co-chairperson, PP/Dr. Kelvin Ho and PP Grace Young for their dedication. My appreciation and thanks are also extended to the President Patrick Chow and President Betty Chiu for their fine efforts.  And last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Organ Transplant Foundation representative Ms. Christine Tse who helped so much in organizing the competition with her contacts and expertise.  The winning film from the two categories will be re-produced by a professional team and will be shared on social media in government websites, school talks, and our District website and Facebook for all members to view.

In the coming year of Rotary, as the Health Chairman myself, I would like to continue with the second phase for the organ donation project, namely that of promoting organ donor registration among our members, their families and their friends and contacts. This project was intended to be a part of the mission that I had in mind for my year, but because of the circumstance of the pandemic, most of this project has had to be postponed to the 2022-2023 year instead.
