Rotary Club of New Territories and Rotaract Club of New Territories assisted primary school students in “Suspending classes without suspending learning” during the Covid-19 pandemic

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, all primary schools in Hong Kong have suspended face-to-face classes. In response to the impact of long-term suspension on primary school students, Rotary Club of New Territories and Rotaract Club of New Territories jointly assisted Books & Beyond Reading Club in implementing an online teaching English service project in October 2020, allowing students to suspend classes without suspend learning.

Teaching English in small classes for primary school students in Hong Kong with poor economic conditions to stimulate their interest in continuous learning

This service project aims to provide free English enhancement courses for primary school students in Hong Kong with poor economic conditions, so that primary school students have more opportunities to learn and experience the fun of learning English, thereby helping students develop interest in English reading and confidence in speaking English. Volunteers enhance students’ interest in learning English by leading lively online classes with interesting topics. Online classes are also conducted in small classes so that volunteers can understand and respond with the abilities and progress of each student more.

Online and offline activities in response to the pandemic to cultivate the confidence of primary school students in using English and the conduct of life

The service project is divided into two steps:

1st step – to interact with primary school students online
The first step will be online teaching given by the Rotaract Club of New Territories to primary school students during the pandemic so that the students can still feel the joy of learning English and cultivate confidence in English reading and speaking during the suspension of classes.

2nd step – to visit primary schools to communicate with primary school students in different ways.

The second step will be the visit of primary schools by Rotary Club of New Territories and Rotaract Club of New Territories after the pandemic is over using role play, cooperative games, interactive storytelling, awards and other forms, to encourage primary school students to learn English together, from which they can develop various skills, such as social skills, self-management, and social awareness.
